Design Visualization Assignment

Here is my assignment for Design Visualization. I felt this assignment did help me to better grasp how to use value to show depth in 3-D drawings.

Memory Box

I know its not much to look at but here is my memory box. My memory came from a book my grandmother gave me when I was very young. My memory was of countless hours reading this book and finding the bible really interesting.

For this project we were asked to refer back to the IARC blog and choose one project from the person below and above you on the list. We were then asked to create an iteration incorporating different elements of both designs into one.

When we created an iteration that was a mixture of the two we were then asked to make two more iterations using the first iteration and the two original projects as inspiration. What resulted were very interesting and thought provoking designs that added a new dimension to the projects used as initial inspirations.

Below are two of the projects I chose to complete my iterations on. The egg projects of Katrina Fischer and Kelly McMillian.

I chose Kelly's egg project because I felt that it captured my eye since it's such a contrast from the curves and the lack of color on the egg. I also felt that with the materials that were currently available to me I felt that this project would be the most conveinent for me to make.

I chose Katrina's egg project because I found that it really captures your eye with how it seems to cradle and protect the egg even though the egg is already broken. What also caught my attention was that the curve of the white paper used mimics the shape and curve of the egg. The black 'straps' also hold the egg and their black color brings the focus back on the egg. If the whole project was monotone then you wouldn't really see the egg.

Now that I had narrowed down my two choices I had to brainstorm ideas of how to create a project that would seem like the perfect marriage between the two and be possible to make.

As you can see I had some pretty interesting ideas going. I wanted to definitley incorporate the curve of Katrina's project because it was very pronounced in hers. I also wanted to reconstruct the lines and linear planes of Kelly's. The lines were probably the biggest element in Kelly's project even though it does have a curve with the hole where the egg is placed.

This was my first iteration and to me I felt that it was a happy medium between Kelly and Katrina's. The curve of Katrina's is still prominent in this one and the focal point. It still serves as the thing that holds up the other parts of the project. I also used some of the vertical lines from Kelly's project. I felt that those were a way to support the structure of her egg project as well. It serves the same purpose in this iteration. The curve and the linear planes act hand in hand to support the whole structure. Without one the structure can't stand on its own.
This is my second iteration. This one is more of a mixture of the first iteration and Kelly's project with its use of linear planes acting as support. I decided to continue the use of two vertical planes serving as a form of support. Since Kelly also used horizontal planes to hold the egg in place I decided to play on that and have three instead of just two. I also decided to space them closer together instead of have a big distance from them. Since the curve was a major part of the last one I had to incorporate them in here somehow. I put it in a place where it can still be a dominant part of the structure but not seem too overbearing and take to much focus off the horizontal lines.

This iteration is supposed to be a mixture of my first iteration and Katrina's project. Like with my first iteration I put the big curve in the middle of the action and I use it as a structural element as well. I also noticed with Katrina's project, the straps holding up the egg formed an 'X'. I felt that it would be interesting to incorporate somehow. So I have two planes form an 'X' in the middle of the the circle that the curve creates, just like Katrina's project only with more focus. My first iteration had a base to help hold it up but was circular. I decided to make the base in this one more rectangular to go along with the overall flow of the iteration.

In this last photo I have all three of my iterations lined up with my first iteration in the middle and the other two on either side. When lined up they appear vaguely reminiscent of letters of a Greek fraternity. This photo also offers a better view of how these iterations borrow from each other. The only thing I wish I could have done different was to of had black matte board to use. Then you could really see how they could appear to be the offspring of Kelly and Katrina's egg projects.

In retrospect I really enjoyed this project more than I did the previous ones because there really weren't any rules with this one. It didn't have to house an egg, pencil, or self-portrait. It didn't have to hold anything if you didn't want it to. I found that aspect extremely freeing. I also enjoyed the idea that I could borrow great ideas that I hadn't thought of myself and be able to incorporate them in a design as I saw fit. It was an wonderful opportunity.

Magazine Layout Inspiration

Here's the inspiration for me blog. Yes I know its simple but I always think less is always more. When thumbing through my magazine I felt that the layout really captured my attention with the enlarged image in the center. Even though the picture is big there is still enough room for text.

Pencil Box

Here is my pencil box. Of all the projects we've done so far this is the one I'm most proud of. Some of my best work. (probably the only one! lol!) My first interation kinda fell apart since I started using it to hold my pencils but this is my final project.

Emergence of Self

Hre is my white figure drawing of myself. The lighting was kinda bad and I couldn't find a strong light source where the mirror was in my room. So the isn't that much of a difference in value but there was a small difference in value on one side of my face. It doesn't really look like me but I tried anyways.
